What are Plug Computers?

A Plug Computer is a new type of device created by Marvell Technology Group, Ltd. that is meant to be a small, low-cost, energy efficient server that fits into the space of a typical power adapter that plugs into an electrical wall socket.

These attributes enable the device to take up very little space, use very little electricity and remain powered on at all times, perfect for a home server.

The reference design of the Plug Computer created by Marvell (here) and manufactured by GlobalScale Technolgies (here), called the SheevaPlug Developement Kit, has been used by several companies to create products for the consumer market.

All of these products use the Linux operating system, customized to serve each individual products' own needs. PlugApps.com is a site dedicated to extending the use of these plug computers where possible by replacing the Linux operating system. This is accomplished via Plugbox Linux, a variant of the Arch Linux distribution that is compiled to run natively on the processor within the Plugs, while still retaining the original product's functionality.

News

August 13 - Minidlna, kernel 2.6.35.1, Cherokee 1.0.8, and more. Progress on PHP has also been made by pepedog, which you can see here.

August 3 - Plugbox 1.1 has been released. Download it for new installations by following updated guides or upgrade your installations with "pacman -Syfu". Enjoy! We plan to write a guide for the Cherokee Web Server tomorrow. It's a really nice web server with a friendly configuration GUI. We also got the DockStar JTAG pinouts from CloudEngines, so expect more U-Boot improvements soon!

August 2 - 1.1 is almost ready! We've finished up the FAQ and uploaded some new extra, community, and core packages. The DockStar kernel (kernel26-dockstar) now includes FUSE support (sorry about missing that). We just have a few minor things to look over for 1.1, which should be out tomorrow, August 3rd.

July 26 - We've built a FreeBSD image and kernel "just because" and we'll be uploading it for enthusiasts soon. It is the 8.1 release.

We want to make a push for more guides and more documentation overall during the next few weeks. Feel free to create a wiki account and add any application to our list. We'd greatly appreciate it.
